(Gray News) — Musician Phil Collins discussed his health issues in a new interview, revealing that he now has a 24-hour live-in nurse to help him.

In a BBC Two TV special, Collins said he recently underwent five knee surgeries.

The 74-year-old said he now has “a knee that works,” but he needs to use crutches for assistance.

He said he developed kidney problems from drinking, saying, “I’d probably been drinking too much, and so my kidneys were messed up.”

Collins said he spent “months” in the hospital, but he is now two years sober.

“I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do,” Collins said in the TV special.

Variety reported that Collins retired from performing with his band Genesis following their final tour in 2022.

Variety reported that Collins had struggled with health problems for nearly two decades, suffering a spinal injury in 2007 that caused severe nerve damage and a domino effect of other issues. He also developed “drop foot” after a back operation that makes it difficult for him to walk.

Collins also suffers from type 2 diabetes.

Rolling Stone reported that Collins is considering returning to the studio, though he initially said last year that his recording days were over.

Collins hasn’t released an album of original music since 2002.
